Gas bills to remain high

The country’s largest energy supplier will not promise to lower its prices, despite recent sharp falls in the price of gas.

As reported in The Telegraph, British Gas has ‘ruled out cutting its customers’ bills’.

“Gas prices have not come down in the way oil prices have,” said Nick Luff, finance director of Centrica (the parent company of British Gas), “and we would need to see a sustained wholesale fall before we cut consumer prices.”

Gas companies, The Telegraph reports, purchase most of their gas in advance on the ‘forward market’. Prices have recently fallen by over 20%, but the Chief Executive of Centrica, Sam Laidlaw, has said he could not promise when – or if – the company would cut gas prices.

“This year’s rising prices have placed a great strain on many household’s budgets,” said a spokesperson for Think Money. “Not just gas prices, but the cost of other essentials such as petrol and food. The recent petrol and food will have come as a real relief to people with debts and other financial problems, but many will be disappointed to hear they can’t expect their gas bills to come down.”

“As with debts of any kind, anyone facing arrears on their gas bill should take action as soon as possible: they should talk to their supplier and if necessary seek professional debt help.”
